Phil Neville has come under fire on social media after posting an image depicting Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea as Jesus.

The shot-stopper had been the subject of many meme’s on social media in the last 24-hours after the Spanish international inspired United to beat Stoke City at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.


The 24-year-old produced a number of fine saves at the death in the victory that kept Louis van Gaal’s side in the Champions League positions.

And fans were quick to pay tribute to the goalkeeper on social media, with a number of images hailing his performance being posted in the hours after the game.

Former England international Neville thought he’d join in the fun and posted an image of the keeper dressed as Jesus to his 138,000 followers.

However, while many found the funny side a number of posters demanded the image be removed insisting the meme was disrespectful to Christianity.

One user, 20designz, demanded: ‘DELETE IT,, PHILIP NEVILLE!!!! THIS IS NOT FUNNY!!!! GOD ISN’T FOR JOKE!!!!’.

Another user, feli.k, added: ‘I didnt know you were like this .. @philipneville18 you should respect others and the God they believed in’, while theresiiaalfii chipped in with ‘Wtf u are joking but it’s not even funny.’
