Mother told to abort one of her twins celebrates 'miracle' healthy birth of both

While pregnant with twins, Carmelle Hartgrove was told she had to make a choice no mother should ever have to tackle.

Doctors told her that the two girls she was carrying were sharing one placenta and the same amniotic sack, putting them both at risk unless she was willing to abort one of them.

Carmelle, who was already a mother to two children at the time, has spoken of the moment she and husband Steve were faced with the life-changing decision on Good Morning Britain.


The 31-year-old from Essex said: ‘The moment they told us it was just another blow but for us we didn’t even have the conversation to make the decision, just in a glance I knew Steve was united and we both just said neither of them are an option and we wanted to pursue and continue with the pregnancy.’

Despite doctors saying there was only a 30 per cent chance of both twins surviving, Charis and Connie both survived and are now happy and healthy toddlers.

Describing the girls as her ‘miracle twins’ Carmelle described the pregnancy as ‘stressful’, with her constantly worrying that one or both of the twins had died in the womb.

However they were delivered via c-section at 32 weeks and have been inseparable since the day of their birth.

‘Even now they are in separate beds they will climb into each others cots in the morning,’ said Carmelle.
