Bastian Schweinsteiger looking forward to ‘special’ season under Jose Mourinho

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger believes the Red Devils can have a ‘special’ season under Jose Mourinho next term.

The 53-year-old is set to be announced as Louis van Gaal’s successor later this week when he’s expected to sign a three-year deal at the club.

Schweinsteiger, 31, has endured an injury-ravaged debut campaign at Old Trafford and is desperately battling to be fit for Germany’s Euro 2016 squad.

The German was brought to the Premier League by Van Gaal having worked with the Dutchman at Bayern Munich and, though Schweinsteiger was sad to see him leave, he believes success is around the corner under Mourinho.

‘We don’t know who will be our new manager yet, but it looks like it’s going to be an interesting derby in Manchester next season,’ said Schweinsteiger.
‘The enthusiasm for football in Manchester is great and if Mourinho does take over at United, I think all of the players want to train under him so it’s going to be quite a special season.

Van Gaal had to convince the United board to sign Schweinsteiger last summer due to the German’s history of injury problems and the midfielder insists he will always have the Dutchman to thank for helping him in his career.

‘I think Louis van Gaal and I have a very special relationship – he moved me into the centre of the midfield at Bayern and I’ve got a lot to thank him for,’ continued the German.

‘Also, my move to United was because of him. I will never say any bad words about somebody for whom I have so much to thank.

‘Quite the opposite – even if we were not always of the same opinion, we had a good relationship. I admire him as a coach and despite a difficult season with really much injury misfortune, he still ended it with a good title.

‘It’s been two years since United last won a title and I think that was a good ending also for him.’
