Lionel Messi has broken Gabriel Batistuta’s all-time goal record for Argentina – another milestone in the quest to become the greatest player in the history of the game.

The diminutive number ten struck his 55th goal – a delicious free-kick against the United States of America in the semi-final of the Copa America – to break the record in his 112th senior international appearance.


Messi, now 28, has hit four hat-tricks, six braces and 31 single goals as part of his haul.

The Barcelona star recently came off the bench to score a hat-trick during a 5-0 win against Panama and is certain to add to his haul barring injury.
