At least three police officers were killed and several more were wounded on Sunday in Baton Rouge, La., near where protests had been held since the police shooting of Alton B. Sterling on July 5.

A suspect had been killed, most likely by police gunfire, said a police spokesman, Cpl. L’Jean McKneely.

Police said initially that they were looking for other possible suspects, but the superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, Col. Michael Edmonson, said at a news conference that person who shot and killed the officers had been shot and killed at the scene.
