The attacker behind yesterday’s
deadly shooting at a Munich mall may have lured his victims with a
Facebook post about a fake offer for free McDonald’s meals.
Ali Sonboly, an18-year-old German-Iranian
man who killed nine people during an attack on the Olympia shopping
centre, opened fire on people in the McDonald’s just before 4pm.
But rather than free burgers, the shooter,
dressed in black, burst from the restaurant’s toilets and shot at
children ‘with a pistol’, witnesses said.

He then continued his rampage at nearby shopping centre Olympia-Einkaufszentrum and aimed at terrified passers-by.
Footage showed a gunman outside a
McDonald’s restaurant thought to be on the same street, firing at people
who could be seen running from the scene.
Police say nine people, including
children, were killed and 21 people injured during the attack. Three
remain critically ill this morning, while 16 others received medical
treatment.
The gunman then killed himself following the attack.

During a press conference, Munich police
chief Hubertus Andrae said the game was ‘one part of the comprehensive
investigation we are conducting’.
Any indication of a motive for the attack
currently remains ‘totally unclear’, Mr Andrae added, and investigations
will be ‘running on all cylinders’.

The police chief confirmed the identity of
the gunman, who killed himself following the attack, as 18-year-old Ali
Sonboly who had dual nationality and had lived in Germany for some
time.
Reports suggest the gunman had been
‘bullied for seven years’ raising fears it was a revenge attack on
those who had bullied him.
