September 11, 2001: 15 haunting images we'll never forget on the 15th anniversary of 9/11

Fifteen years ago, the world changed forever when Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four planes, flying them into buildings representing everything America stood for and killing 2,996 people in one day.
It would immediately and obviously shape history.

But now a generation of young adults are growing up without memories of where they were or what their first reaction was to the â€˜breaking news’ banner or urgent interruption by someone who needed to tell them the news.

This is what happened on September 11 2001, using information from the 9/11 Memorial Timeline. For the full details of the day as well as a timeline of Ground Zero recovery after 9/11 and of the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing, click here.

Though it happened over a decade ago, these 15 images show just how chilling the attacks still are today.
