Uhuru Kenyatta re-elected Kenya president, tells Raila Odinga that they are brothers (VIDEO)
Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has been re-elected following Tuesday's vote, the national electoral commission announced Friday evening.
Mr. Kenyatta took 54.27% of votes, ahead of his rival Raila Odinga, with 44.7%.
But the opposition coalition rejected the commission's announcement before the results were declared, calling the process a “charade".
Hundreds of police in anti-riot gear are in the streets of the capital, Nairobi, amid fears of further protests by supporters of opposition candidate Raila Odinga who claims the vote was rigged.
Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta told his main rival Raila Odinga that he extends a hand of friendship because they are “brothers”.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Jubilee Party’s Uhuru Kenyatta the winner of the August 8 poll, with NASA candidate Raila Odinga coming second.
"I reach out to you I reach out to all your supporters. We shall work together.. Let us always remember that we are brothers and sisters. Let us be peaceful. Politicians come and go but your neighbor is still your neighbor," Kenyatta said.
