EFCC freezes Akwa Ibom, Benue State govt accounts
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have frozen the bank accounts of the Akwa Ibom and Benue State Government; AsbGist Nigeria can confirm.
The anti-corruption agency gave the order on Wednesday.
Governor Udom Emmanuel and the Accountant-General of the state were shocked by the development.
“The governor was shocked when he was briefed about the development,” a source told The Cable.
“He has demanded explanation from the EFCC. Our suspicion is that our big friend who just departed is behind the issue but we will fight this injustice.”
The freezing of Akwa Ibom government accounts happened 24 hours after the commission blocked Benue government accounts.
It also incidentally happened on a day former governor of the state Senator Goodswill Akpabio decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Earlier on Wednesday, The EFCC also freezed the accounts of the Benue State government, following the defection of Governor Samuel Ortom from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP).
Terver Akase, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, alleged that it was part of agenda to cripple the state.
“Yes, it is part of the evil agenda to cripple the state. It is only in Benue that the EFCC is probing the security vote of the governor,” he said.
