Jessie Gallan celebrated her 109th birthday on January 2nd. And Scotland’s oldest woman has been sharing her secrets on how to have a long, healthy life.

She told MailOnline: ‘My secret to a long life has been staying away from men. They’re just more trouble than they’re worth.’

Also among her top tips is eating a daily bowl of porridge.

‘I also made sure that I got plenty of exercise, eat a nice warm bowl of porridge every morning and have never gotten married,’ she said.

Jessie was born in 1906 in a two-bed farm cottage, where she slept top to tail with her five sisters and one brother. She left aged 13 to become a milkmaid.

She now lives at the Crosby House care home in Aberdeen, where she celebrated turning 109 with lunch with friends and a slice of cake.

Rebecca Streeter, a support worker at the care home, said: ‘Jessie still takes part in the group activities, she likes her exercise.

‘She goes to all the concerts and enjoys her church on a Sunday. And obviously she has led a very healthy lifestyle.’

Jessie also puts a lot of stock in knitting.

So, in conclusion, the secret to a long life is staying away from men, eating porridge every day, exercise and knitting. Good to know.
