The Frenchman, only promoted to the top job in January following the sacking of Rafa Benitez, owed victory to Ronaldo who converted the decisive spot kick after Juanfran’s penalty had struck the post.

Much like the final between the two Madrid sides in the 2014 final, this was a cagey, fraught and tense affair ultimately decided by shootout after Yannick Ferreira Carrasco had cancelled out Sergio Ramos’ controversial opening goal.
