Meet the 91-year-old medical doctor who has been practicing for 57 years and not ready to retire

91-year-old Dr. Melissa Freeman has been practicing for 57 years and she is not ready to retire anytime soon.

The Bronx native is on the front lines in the fight against the opioid epidemic.

Dr. Melissa Freeman finished medical school in 1955 and has practiced medicine since 1961.

In honor of Black History Month, abc7NY profiled Freeman for her significant contribution to the African American community.

In an interview with abc7NY, she said: "A little ache, yes, but other than that, I don't feel that I'm my age.

"I've had friends who say, 'What are you doing? Why are you working in that field treating addiction?'" she said. "Somebody has to do it, and not enough people are doing it."

Dr. Freeman still attends to patients in her office uptown, and she still rides the subway and buses.

She dismisses questions about retirement.

"I'm not ready yet," she said. "It's been a nice journey. I wouldn't have done it any other way."
